Lisbon has been Portugal's capital since it was conquest by the moors in 1147. Its oldest quarter, the Alfama still retains its original layout despite being partly destroyed during an earthquake in 1755. Also worse a visit, the old quarters of Castelo and Mouraria on both sides of the hill crowned by St Georges Castle. Every June in this area, there is a feast commemorating popular saints.

Lisbon has an exciting nightlife and features many interesting museums such as Casa Fernando Pessoa showing the life and work of the Portuguese writer or the Centro de Arte Moderna exhibiting modern works from 1910 to the present day.
